Ethiopians win Houston Marathon; Cluster sets American record

Bazu Worku held up three fingers as he headed down the last extend of the Houston Marathon.

Worku, trailing Ethiopian compatriot Yitayal Atnafu by 23 seconds with around two miles left, turned on the planes Sunday to win the occasion for the third straight time.

"Yitayal, my rival, we prepare together," Worku said through an interpreter. "I realize that he is an exceptionally solid individual and prepares extremely well . When he put such a great amount into his pace after 25 kilometers, at that point I understood he can't complete with that pace. At that point I connected my technique." Biruktayit Degefa won the ladies' race and two-time Olympian Molly Group broke the record for the quickest half-marathon by an American lady.

It was 34 degrees for the begin of the race and Worku won with a period of 2 hours, 8 minutes, 30 seconds. With triumphs in 2013 and 2014, he turned into the third sprinter to win the race three times, joining David Cheruiyot of Kenya and Stephen Ndungu of Ethiopia.

This is the third straight year Atnafu completed second at the Houston Marathon.

Degefa caught her second ladies' title at the Houston Marathon, completing with a period of 2:24:51. She has contended in this race five years in succession.

"When I come to Houston I feel an exceptional satisfaction," Degefa said. "I think about Houston as the place where I grew up. As though I'm going to a family. These five years, I know Houston exceptionally well. I come exceptionally arranged and I knew I would win today."

An Ethiopian sprinter has won the lady's title for 12 straight years.

Cluster crossed the half-marathon complete line in 1:07:25. Her opportunity, an individual best, broke the past record by 9 seconds, set by Deena Kastor in 2006.

Jake Robertson of New Zealand won the men's half-marathon in 1:00:01, tying an individual record. He completed 39 seconds off the race record.

"Since winning the race, everyone's helping me to remember the time, I get increasingly annoyed with the time," Robertson said with a giggle. "Contemplating the bore of the field I beat today, I'm overjoyed still. It was astounding dashing and the way I felt doing it."

Ethiopia's Ruti Aga won the ladies' half-marathon in an individual best 1:06:39, beating her past characteristic of 1:08:07.

"I was glad that I accomplished that, later on I would like to improve," Aga said through an interpreter.

Cluster crossed in an individual best 1:07:25, topping her past characteristic of 1:07:41 out of 2016. She broke the American record by nine seconds, a stamp set by Deena Kastor in 2006.

"Just to be in the organization of Deena Kastor, who had such an extraordinary marathon vocation, gives me a great deal of certainty," Group said. "It's an extremely uncommon thing.
